SARASOTA, Fla. (April 26, 2026) — Congressional Candidate Allen Spence condemns White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting, calls for unity against political violence.
CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE ALLEN SPENCE: It breaks my heart to see yet another act of political violence in our country, especially at such an important event as the White House Correspondents’ Dinner celebrating our Constitutional freedoms. A federal officer was injured, and I wish him the very best as he recovers. I am thankful for the rapid response and heroic actions of our law enforcement last night.
Political violence is un-American and has no place in our country. All leaders in our community should unite in condemning this kind of violence that makes citizens afraid to speak out and express their political beliefs.
I became more involved in politics after January 6th because I believe deeply in the peaceful transfer of power, the rule of law and the strength of our democratic republic.
That is why I was disappointed to see the Sarasota County Democratic Party (S.C.D.P.) respond to an attempt on a president's life with the words ‘Well that sucks.’ Regardless of political differences, political violence is never acceptable, and the attempted assassination of a sitting president deserves unequivocal condemnation. That kind of callousness does not represent the values of the people I speak to across Southwest Florida every day, and it does not represent me.
I am calling on the S.C.D.P. to issue a proper statement reflecting the gravity of what occurred and to lead with the decency our community expects and deserves. Now is the time to stand together and defend those values.
